Long before the NHL became Canada’s defining sport, a pastor built a league of his own.

It’s been some years since I did the research for a book based on The Coloured Hockey League of the Maritimes. Where originally there was very little information about them, and no one knew much about the pastor who started the league. Now they are celebrated across the internet and Canada. I remember the research like yesterday, I had to dig deep, every little piece of information formed part of the story. …and what a story it was, not just from the success of the league but also the racism they had to endure. The research dug up old fixtures and articles in the papers, and I built trees for the families and baptist pastor who brought together the team. It was clear, the motivation behind it was to distract from what was going on around these young men, and give them something positive to look forward to.

I did write a small story about their history over on my substack if you are interested to read more.
